Day 1 - Puerto Vallarta

The Dreams Resort & Spa is the perfect spot for your romantic getaway. Located away from the main drag but still just minutes from downtown, you'll feel like you're in your own little oasis. The private beach is one of the area's most beautiful beaches, and it's yours to enjoy without tons of other tourists or beach vendors. The new Club Tower building has balconies with beautiful views, and the balconies from the sixth story up have whirlpools on them. There are also several good restaurants on the resort compound, but you're close enough to PV to head in and try some authentic and creative restaurants. After you get settled in, go out to get a glimpse of some of the area's most spectacular sealife. Open Air is a wonderful tour operation, and is the most ecologically friendly and authentic whale-watching outfit. The bilingual marine biologists that guide the tours are incredibly knowledgeable as they are involved in several research projects involving sea mammal identification and conservation. If you can afford it, go out on a more personal private charter to view the breathtaking groups of humpbacks that come through PV during the winter months. In the evening, try a more relaxing trip on the water with Vallarta Adventures' Rhythms of the Night tour. There's a sunset cruise across the bay to start, and you'll end up in Las Caletas for a cultural show and then a candlelit dinner on the beach before a smooth sail back across the water with gentle live music and a beautiful view of the lights of the city. Although this trip is definitely touristy, the dinner is delicious, the entertainers in the show are talented, and the chance to float along the bay at night is a wonderful romantic experience.

Day 2 - Puerto Vallarta

Take a walk around the city today to get a feel for some of the local culture. There are tons of incredible local artists around PV whose works are on exhibit in many galleries around downtown, and there are some nice walking tours, or you can just explore on foot and stop into any place that looks interesting. If you have some interest in learning more about the local art of tequila, take the afternoon Mexican Folklore and Tequila tour. On this short and fun tour, several bilingual experts will take you through the history and the making of tequila, then during the tasting will explain the different flavors in tequilas and the differences in quality. Included in the tour are some great tacos from a nearby vendor, as well. If you want some afternoon beach time at a more private location, try the pristine secluded beach at Playa del Oasis. Otherwise, stay and walk around town some more. Head up for the beautiful view of the sunset over the city at Barcelona, a wonderful tapas restaurant. Sit on the patio, even though it's a bit noisier. The sangria here is exceptional, as is the paella and some other seafood dishes. If you're up for a little nightlife, take a stroll to the arches of the Theater Aquiles Serdan to appreciate the architecture here and stop in to watch a show if there's one going on.

Day 3 - Puerto Vallarta

Get a taste of the coast's surfer culture with a trip to Sayulita, a small laidback town north of PV. Still a charming, largely un-touristy fishing village, there are a few new improvements that mark the growing popularity of this surfing destination, such as some gourmet restaurants. There are plenty of rental boards and lessons to be found on the town's main beach. The gentle waves here are perfect for learning how to surf together, and there are some bigger waves in nearby coves for a more private and exciting experience if you already know how to surf. This is another hidden gem that many of the tourists that come to PV have no idea about, and learning to surf together is a wonderful experience. You'll definitely be tired after a couple of hours of surfing, so stop in for a rest and try the catch of the day at Don Pedro's, a wonderful restaurant right on the sand in Sayulita. Hop on the bus or take a cab back into PV in the afternoon, and take a walk around El Malecon, the city's beachside boardwalk. This is tourist-central, but there's lots of interesting shops and cafes to shop in and investigate. Make your way to the Marina Vallarta by sunset for a drink. At the top of the marina's lighthouse is the Faro bar, a comfortable lounge with casual live music in a beautiful setting and delicious tropical drinks, as well as a nice wine list. Near the lighthouse is the cozy restaurant Suzie Wong's. You may not think you'd find Chinese this good in PV, but Suzie's is the real thing and one of the most romantic places in town, with great authentic classics amid a beautiful garden right off the marina.

Day 4 - Puerto Vallarta

Go out on a morning tour with Eco Tours, who offer several unique ways to see PV's natural habitats and wildlife. The combination sea kayaking and snorkeling trip is particularly enjoyable, with a kayaking trip that's just the right length out to a cove where your small group will be the only ones snorkeling with the fish, rays, and eels that live here. Eco Tours also offers a beautiful hike through the jungle up to the Cuale waterfall, and several lovely bird-watching excursions. Eco Tours is a great company that does a lot of conservation outreach programs and tries to ensure that tour companies around PV follow environmental guidelines. After a trip with them, you'll probably have a few hours before sunset for some more beach time, so lay around at the hotel beach or visit the Playa de Oro, a PV beach with lots of fun water sports and lovely sand for lounging in. Before sunset, take the short trip up to Le Kliff restaurant, built (as the name suggests) as several tiers in the side of a cliff, and with spectacular ocean views. This is a wonderful place to watch the sunset together and enjoy the evening breezes, and the ambience and wonderful seafood dishes complete the package.

Day 5 - Puerto Vallarta

Take another day trip to a nearby village, such as Boca de Tomatlan or Playa Yelapa (or both!). The last stop on the road south, Boca has tons to do, with some beautiful hiking trails through the jungle, including one to the top of a waterfall you can jump off. There's also some good snorkeling here, and plenty of rental shops so you can try pretty much any activity you'd like. Further south of Boca, only accessible by boat, is Playa Yelapa. There is more great hiking here and lots of beautiful waterfalls, and the best way to see Yelapa is on horseback. There are several little outfitters around here, and you can take a guided tour or just explore on your own if you're more experienced riders. There are some sweet little restaurants on the beaches at both spots, perfect for an afternoon snack. Hop on an afternoon boat so you can get back to PV in time for dinner. Try the sweet River Cafe along the Cuale River, which serves international cuisine. The service is personal here, and the candlelit waterside setting is so romantic.

Day 6 - Puerto Vallarta

Start out with a half-day beach horseback ride with Sea Mi Amor, an ecological tour outfit that provides delicious food and drink along with their well-planned and enjoyable activity choices. If you'd rather spend more time in the water, they also have some great snorkeling options. Lay back in the sand afterwards to relax at at Playa Las Glorias, one of the most fun beaches in PV, with beautiful sand and waters and tons of beach activities to take advantage of. Try some parasailing, or do some more snorkeling if you'd like to see more of the underwater flora and fauna. Finish your day at Cafe des Artistes, where you'll feel like you're sitting in a tropical oasis over dinner in the terrace courtyard. The prix fixe menus here feature some of the most delicious dishes you'll ever eat, and the wine list and dessert menu are amazing as well.
