Description:
Step upon the beautiful Prince of Whales, Open Air Expeditions' specially designed and equipped whale watching vessel, for an unforgettable learning experience and a whale of a good time. The whale-watching season (from early December through March) drives thousands of visitors each year onto the water. It seems everyone wants to get an up close look at the humpback whales who call the Banderas Bay home every winter. Open Air Expeditions' whale watching tour has earned the respect of the governing bodies that protect marine life for their unerring compliance with laws, as well as for operating the only U.S. Coast Guard-certified whale watching craft in Puerto Vallarta. Your experienced crew will include bi-lingual marine biologists who will teach you about the life and behaviors of the majestic sea mammals who come to the deep waters of Puerto Vallarta each year to mate and calve. If you prefer, Open Expeditions can also arrange dolphin encounters. All tours are designed for small groups and you should plan for up to four hours at sea. Each tour includes fruit, bottled water and snacks

Description:
Winter visitors to Puerto Vallarta can count on two things – getting a great tan, and spotting a few humpback whales frolicking offshore. These magnificent creatures return to Puerto Vallata each year, drawn by its large, deep water bay and the perfect conditions it provides for breeding and calving. The "official" whale-watching season is December 8th through March 23rd, but whales don't use calendars, and it's not unusual to see a few of these great marine mammals for a few weeks before and after those dates. Whether you are walking along the Malecon or sipping a margarita at one of the charming cafes along the oceanfront, the chances are good you will see a couple of playful whales spouting and breaching against the horizon, so keep your binoculars handy. If you are afraid to leave it to chance, there are many whale-watching tours to choose from. At least one of the tours uses a light aircraft spotter plane to track the whales and then communicate the pod's location to the boat's captain. Many visitors choose a trip to the Marieta islands, one of the most beautiful marine reserves in the region, by renting a kayak or taking a boat cruise, which combines whale watching, swimming, snorkeling and bird watching. While out on the bay, you can also expect to see dolphins and sea turtles. Mexico has strict laws protecting wild life, so all whale-watching tours are licensed and regulated by the government.

Description:
Galleria Dante is the love-child an American/Canadian couple, Joe and Claire Guariere, who moved to Puerto Vallarta in the 80's to realize their life-long dream of supporting the arts. Their first business venture in Puerto Vallarta was a popular pizza joint on the now trendy shopping and eating street called Basilio Badillo. While the pizza was pretty good, their unique and beautiful personal art collection, brought back from visits to Europe, that adorned the walls was what really caught people's attention. Realizing they had something special to offer, they took out the pizza ovens and opened Galleria Dante, a remarkable juxtaposition of original contemporary sculptures and painting by over a hundred fresh artists (primarily Mexican). Rumors among the locals claim that if an artist can capture the interest of Galleria Dante they will most likely transition from starving artist to being a respected member of Vallarta's elite art community. New artwork comes in on a weekly basis, so even if you have visited this Gallery in the past, it is always worth a second look. Open Mon-Fri, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Returning visitors to Puerto Vallarta long for two things – that first margarita and a visit to the magnificent El Malecón (boardwalk). This beautiful, mile long oceanfront walkway, an easy walk or short car ride from most of the city's hotels, traces the beach, running parallel to the main street. The Malecon offers stunning, unobstructed views of sand and surf and is the perfect place to watch Vallarta's magical sunsets. In 2005 the Malecon was extended to link downtown with the popular Romantic Zone, giving all visitors easier access to enjoying it. Whether you are looking for shopping, dining or music – you won't be disappointed with a visit to the Malen. Don't miss the famous permanent sculptures by local artists. On Saturday nights, you are likely to see the customary Mexican "courting" ritual as teenagers walk hand-in-hand along the boardwalk, their entire family trailing two feet behind. Restaurants, bars and boutiques selling trendy clothing, silver, folk art, Cuban Cigars and tequila abound near the Malecon. During the rainy season the waterfalls are spectacular and swimming holes are abundant. Remember to bring your insect repellent, the jungle is dense behind the small beach town and mosquitoes and no-see-ems come out in full force during the night.
Description:
If you want to get an idea of what Puerto Vallarta was like in the distant past, you can hop a water taxi at Boca de Tomatlan or from the Fisherman's Pier in Puerto Vallarta to Yelapa and find out. Yelapa is only accessible by boat and only in the last few years was it connected to the local power grid. There are no cars, no massive hotel complexes or large groups of tourists here.
If you are staying for the day, hop the taxi in the morning. You can take a hike or horseback ride up to the waterfall, eat at one of few beachfront palapa-style restaurants and then spend the day sunning and swimming in the gentle waters of the cove (albeit among the fishing boats that tie up there). Our Local Expert Says:
Course after course of amazing dishes.
Description:
Chef Thierry Blouet is a bit of a local celebrity and well-known for his successful restaurant endeavors. Cafe des Artistes is extremely popular, especially for special events and celebrations. The atmosphere is lovely, with beautiful decor and a romantic garden patio for dining. There's also the upscale bar area which is great for wine tastings and cocktails before dinner. This is not a casual restaurant so be prepared to dress up if you want to fit in and not stand out.
The service is as impeccable as the food. The waiters are attentive without hovering. One of the best times to visit is during Restaurant Week when you can enjoy the prix fixe menu and a selection of menu items, including sumptuous desserts. The menu does change seasonally and you should always consider the specials. The upscale atmosphere and creative, eclectic menu are reflected in the prices. Located across the street from the Galerie des Artistes. This is a "don't miss" for a birthday, engagement or honeymoon dinner. -

Description:
Dreams Resort is a luxury all-inclusive resort located about 10 minutes south of Puerto Vallarta's Romantic Zone. It offers a private white sand beach in its own cove. The hotel consists of two buildings: both facing the beach and ocean. There are standard rooms, with balconies and a view or suites, some of which have private pools and whirlpool tubs. There is an adults-only pool area, offering a nice respite from the families with children. Dream's is also popular with wedding parties and offers a gazebo for ceremonies.
There are many restaurants on site which is good, because you can't walk to anything nearby. You'll have to take a bus or cab into town if you want to dine off-site. Several of the restaurants don't require reservations and you can dine in your room 24 hours a day, if you want.
