Flea Market in Puerto Viejo

Address:

Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica

NileGuide Expert tip:

The flea market is a good place to find "green" beach totes and shopping bags- sometimes there are even Trader Joe's bags in stock.

Description:

The Flea Market in Puerto Viejo is the place to go for used-but-not-abused clothing some new stuff, too. The selection is colorful- lots of Hawaiian shirts and flowy sundresses- and well-priced- we snapped up vintage Jean Paul Gaultier babydoll dress for 3500 colones, or about $7, and a brand new bikini (tags attached) for $10- definitely the best deals in town, as long as you don't mind a little browsing sans a/c. Sometimes there are handmade items from local designers hanging on display that are worth checking out, like the adorable Bolivian snuggly with a padded sling- perfect for a traveling mother or souvenir gift.

The Flea Market is just off the main road in the center of town, between the Casa de Cultura and the hardware store, and is open every day except Sunday. On Saturday the local farmers' market happens in the same space, so get some goat cheese and grapes with your vintage garments, then get ye to la playa!
