The political and cultural capital of Ecuador, Quito is a vibrant hub, home to one of the largest and most well-preserved colonial centers on the continent, making it a not-to-be-missed stop for anyone contemplating visiting South America. The city is nestled between volcanic peaks, deep in the Andean mountain valley, which provides a stunning natural backdrop in which to enjoy Quito's cultural and historic preeminence.
By far the most charismatic manifestation of Ecuadorian culture is to be found in the old town. The meandering colonial pathways and fantastically preserved historic monuments are what have earned Quito the title of a UNESCO world heritage site, recognized way back in 1978. Despite international attention, the old part of town still preserves a timeless rough-around-the-edges panache. Expect to be ushered along the narrow cobblestone alleyways by indigenous-looking locals in full traditional dress, haggled and hollered at by street vendors, or otherwise entertained by accordion players who fill the air with a catchy tune that mingles with the smell of a nearby roasting pig or peanut stand. The central plaza sits at the center of all this hectic hustle and bustle, and it is bordered by the all-important governmental palace, the cathedral and the presidential buildings. To spy on some of the most striking colonial splendors, watch out for the Monastery of San Francisco, which is the oldest colonial building in the city and also the home of the art gallery Museo Franciscano.
In stark contrast, a visit to the new town will uncover a neighborhood that epitomizes modernity, overrun by high-rise hotels and government complexes. The Mariscal district has a particularly cosmopolitan atmosphere, and it is here that you can find a plethora of music cafes, international restaurants and tourist boutiques.
Quito is also a popular springboard for a number of fantastic day excursions. An unforgettable adventure can be found at the world-famous Mitad Del Mundo. Only 22 kilometers out of the city center, the Equatorial Line is at zero latitude, offering the opportunity to spread you weight between two hemispheres in one short step. The site also offers a fantastic museum uncovering the indigenous ethnology of Ecuador.
