With a flourishing Latin community and access to the desert and California, the Mexican food in Reno is actually pretty darn good. A lot of the restaurants like Los Compadres and Beto's are small family run establishments and offer authentic Mexican cuisine at low prices.
Other restaurants like Bertha Miranda's near downtown Reno and Miguel's have been in the area for so long that they are household names. Both Bertha's and Miguel's serve up great food and even better margaritas in charming and warm atmospheres. Another favorite of locals is Los Compadres. They have some excellent choices of authentic cuisine like fresh guacamole and Mexican pizzas. Mi Casa Too on 4th Street also attracts locals for their large portions, great service and their $5.95 lunch specials. El Borracho (the drunk) in MidTown has a loyal following for their funky atmosphere and cheap prices, even on their seafood.
Even though it is not a Mexican restaurant per se, Peg's Glorified Ham & Eggs in downtown Reno serves up some wonderful Latin-style breakfasts like skillets with eggs beans and tortillas or their to-die-for Huevos Rancheros. El Salvador near California Avenue does not serve Mexican, but does have some wonderful El Salvadorian food and some great deals on their pupusas and drinks.
Many of the casino buffets will serve Mexican food in one section of the buffet. You can pick and choose what you want from tamales and fresh salads to sopapillas and salsa at the Eldorado buffet, the Tivoli Gardens or Carvings Buffet at Harrah's
