Reno is close to some of the best hiking in the Sierras. There are even a few hiking trails within the city including the Truckee River pedestrian path and the pathways around Rancho San Rafael Park in Northwest Reno.
For some hiking close to Reno, but with views of Lake Tahoe, take a hike up the Mt. Rose Summit Trail or around the Tahoe Meadows. A little bit lower down into the valley, you can hike from Davis Creek Park or Bowers Mansion up the Ophir Creek Trail. For some great views of Reno, go hiking from Windy Hill down to Bartley Ranch in Southwest Reno, or up the Galena Creek Trail into the foothills off of the Mt. Rose Highway.
For something a bit different, do some high altitude walking around Virginia City and in the foothills surrounding this working Western town, or visit the nature center at Oxbow Park which is just West of downtown Reno.
