4. Truckee River Whitewater Park
- Surrounding Wingfield Park in Downtown Reno is the very popular Truckee River Whitewater Park. Nearly every summer day there are crowds of people enjoying the river, either by wading in it, rafting in it, kayaking or even swimming on a hot day. On cooler days, this is a perfect place for whitewater kayaking. This park is the only park in the U.S. that is right smack downtown close to hotels and parking and it open year-round.

For a casino town, Reno has a surprising amount of areas to see nature and wildlife. Most of these areas are city parks or some of the trails in the nearby foothills. For some fun views of the city and maybe even a glimpse of some fat marmots, visit Windy Hill, just above Bartley Ranch.
In the downtown river parks of Wingfield, Idlewild and the Oxbow Nature area you can see various animals such as beaver, birds, waterfowl and even do some fishing. At the large park of Rancho San Rafael near the University of Nevada you can see birds, squirrels and chipmunks and maybe even a deer or coyote.
Just outside of town you can do some nature walks at Davis Creek State Park and the nearby Ophir Creek Trail as well as the Bower's Mansion State Park. Right by these parks is the Washoe Lake State Park which is excellent for boating, horseback riding and fishing. Closer to Reno is the beautiful Galena Creek Trail where you may see more deer and maybe even a bear.
