1. Rancho San Rafael Park
- This beautifully landscaped area is one of Reno's premier parks. The Great Reno Balloon Race and "Reno Celebrates America", a fireworks show on the fourth of July, are a couple of the major events taking place here. On the grounds of this huge park you will find the Wilbur D. May Museum and Arboretum and the Great Basin Adventure Amusement Park. You will also find miles of walking or jogging trails complete with exercise stations, a large playground, picnic and barbecue facilities and acres and acres of grass.

4. Truckee River Whitewater Park
- Surrounding Wingfield Park in Downtown Reno is the very popular Truckee River Whitewater Park. Nearly every summer day there are crowds of people enjoying the river, either by wading in it, rafting in it, kayaking or even swimming on a hot day. On cooler days, this is a perfect place for whitewater kayaking. This park is the only park in the U.S. that is right smack downtown close to hotels and parking and it open year-round.

Reno has a surprising number of parks and outdoor areas within and just outside of the main city center. Many of these places have great views of the surrounding mountains or are located next to the Truckee River.
At city parks like Rancho San Rafael and Idlewild Park, you can enjoy a picnic, a walk along the river or on several nature paths and feed local ducks and geese in the various water features. Virginia Lake Park near downtown is a great place to go walking and Wingfield Park in downtown is where all the summer action happens.
Oxbow Park is wonderful for a nature hike or for river fishing as well as a picnic and Bartley Ranch and Windy Hill has great hiking and views of the entire city. For more river action, go to Rock Park in Sparks or to the Truckee River Whitewater Park in downtown Reno.
For hiking and walking just outside of the city, head to Davis Creek for a hike up the Ophir Creek Trail or if you have the entire day, hike up to the top of Mt. Rose, one of the tallest peaks in the area.
