Of all the four-star hotels in the city center, this SAS takes top honors for stylishness, value, and service. The historic 1919 building is the former headquarters of Eimskip, the first major shipping line in Iceland, and almost matches the Borg in grandeur. Much has been made of the avant-garde sculptures of silver-coated human bodies embedded in the walls of the lobby, and the original grand marble staircase. Modern Scandinavian design -- with wood lending the only "color" to the cold minimalism -- rarely feels so sumptuous. Bathrooms are large, and bedroom ceilings rise to 4m (13 ft.). The added value of a deluxe room is simply more space, but rooms with harbor views book fast. Downstairs is the prestigious restaurant, Salt, and a wonderful lounge with a grownup and subdued vibe.
