Description:
- The affluent neighborhood of Barra da Tijuca is more famous for its expensive nightclubs than its cheap and cheerful bars, but this pleasant square is a haven for drinkers and diners on a budget. Located in a residential spot next to a university building, the owners of the myriad bars and restaurants barter for student custom, resulting in some of the cheapest drinks deals to be found anywhere in the city. The square throngs with people virtually every night of the week, and hungry visitors to Rio could do worse than take advantage of the many lunchtime all-you-can eat and pay by weight deals. Those on more flexible budgets may want to take a seat at one of several more formal restaurants, which open until late into the night. -Lucy Bryson
