- The sleek suburb of Barra da Tijuca is famous for its upscale nightclubs, but this late-opening bar is a refreshing alternative for visitors looking for an attitude-free night out. Sao Nunca Botequim is an excellent example of the traditional Rio drinking den, but the concept has been given a bit of a spit and a polish to suit the well-heeled location. The emphasis is on beer and bar snacks rather than formal dining, with classics such as bolinho de aipim (fried yucca filled with meat, chicken or cheese) being popular orders. Live samba and pagode make up the musical menu, while draught and bottled Brazilian beer help everybody get into the party spirit. -Lucy Bryson
