• There's no shortage of Irish bars in Ipanema, but this late 2009 addition to the upscale neighborhood's drinking scene is a cut above the competition. The English owner has successfully pulled off the near-impossible trick of designing a bar that is traditional yet sophisticated, and the range of imported beers on offer (yes, those hankering after a Guinness can get their fix here) is impressive. The menu, too, goes above and beyond what one would expect of your standard Irish Pub, with hearty dishes like beef stew, Yorkshire pudding and fish and chips being crafted to perfection by a head chef who picked up Time Out's Bar Food of the Year award for his work at the original Waxy's in Dubai. With live music and themed nights every night of the week, Waxy's is keen to establish itself as a party venue, and is already attracting a lively mix of homesick tourists and curious locals. -Lucy Bryson
