Rio de Janeiro has a famously lively gay scene, and there's certainly a lot going on if you know where to look.
Gay and lesbian-friendly bars and nightclubs in Rio are listed as 'GLS' (gay, lesbian and sympathisers), meaning that essentially anybody is welcome as long as they have an open mind and a non-judgemental attitude.
Much of Rio's gay social scene centres around a sretch of Ipanema beach marked by a giant rainbow flag, while the nearby Farme do Amoeda is a chic street lined with gay-friendly bars and restaurants.
Also in Ipanema, Casa da Lua is a subtle and smart lesbian bar, while late-night party action takes place at Le Boy and Le Girl in Copacabana.
