Hotels in Rio de Janeiro are expensive by South American standards, but there are still some cheap Rio de Janeiro lodgings to be found if you know where to look. Generally speaking, you'll get more bang for your buck if you are prepared to make your base some distance from the beaches, although our number one pick, Arpoador Inn, delivers affordable accommodation right on the sands, slap bang between Ipanema and Copacabana.
At the far end of Copacabana, known as Leme, Grandville Ouro Verde is a kooky hotel in an art deco building whose prices are good considering its prime beach location. The hills of Santa Teresa, with its wealth of rambling old mansion houses, is host to some affordable guest houses and hostels, such as the friendly Casa Aurea.
Meanwhile, increased police pacification of the city's favelas (slums) means that these hillside locations are increasingly appealing to tourists. The Maze, in a safe favela near Catete, offers breathtaking views and a fascinating insight into favela living. Remember that major holidays such as New Year's in Rio and Rio Carnival see prices skyrocket, so be sure to book several months in advance if you want to avoid paying through the nose.
