The Italian culinary influence can be strongly felt in Brazil, and there are many good Italian Restaurants in Rio de Janeiro. From top-end, high-priced affairs such as our number one Rio de Janeiro Italian restaurant, Gero, to more down to earth affairs such as Pizzaria Rainbow, in Copacabana, fans of Italian food will not go hungry in Rio.
Aside from Gero, which has been showered with awards since it opened less than a decade ago, two of the finest spots for Italian dishes in Rio are in fact hotel restaurants. But when the hotels in question are the uber-glamorous Fasano Rio and the enduringly chic Copacabana Palace, one would expect standards to be high. And high they are, as are the prices.
One word of warning - pizza in Rio de Janeiro is ubiquitous but frequently disappointing. Cheap snack bars serve heavy lumps of dough topped with greasy cheese, and diners will fare little better at some of the tourist trap restaurants along Copacabana beach front. For those who are willing to pay extra for top quality ingredients, the Capricciosa chain serves some of the best slices in the city. The glass-fronted Ipanema branch is a top spot for people-watching, with elegant diners heading here to see and be seen.
