  • Whatever your taste and whatever your budget, Rio de Janeiro restaurants have something to tempt you. The city's diverse dining scene runs the gamut from all you can eat meat feasts to fresh-from-the-sea fish and seafood and wonderfully exotic fruit and vegetables.

Visitors with a travel budget that's as healthy as their appetite can take their pick from an ever-increasing number of genuinely impressive restaurants, many of which are located in the wealthy beach neighborhoods of Ipanema and Leblon. However, out number one pick, Bar do Arnaudo, is wonderfully affordable to all, and offers delicious Northeastern dishes in absolutely mammoth portions. Just don't think about the calorie count.

Budget travelers in Rio will find there is plenty of opportunity to fill up on quality food without blowing the travel budget, and should be on the look out for 'rodizio' restaurants - which offer all you can eat for a set price. Most rodizios are either meat-based or pizza and pasta-based, and range from cheap and cheerful to chic and super-expensive.

Rio de Janeiro is famous for its churrascarias - grilled meat restaurants - where, For a set price, waiters will deliver slice after slice of every type of meat you could dream of until you can simply eat no more. While this might sound like any vegetarian's worst nightmare, that's not necessarily the case. The price at churrasco restaurants also includes as much as you can eat from a vast buffet, which at the better restaurants will include everything from pasta and rice dishes to salads and sushi. Porcao is an excellent Churrascaria with several branches across the city, and the Flamengo Branch, Porcao Rio's, has fantastic views of Sugar Loaf mountain. Meanwhile, Carretao is a good quality option for those with an eye on the budget.

While Brazil is undoubtedly a nation of carnivores, Rio is a very body-conscious city, and consequently vegetarians can take dine very well at any of the 'natural' restaurants that put an emphasis on fresh, organic and largely meat-free ingredients.
