  • The Best of NileGuide

  • Downtown Rio de Janeiro hotels may lack the beaches of the Zona Sul, but they make up for it in value for money and proximity to business amenities and lively nightlife.

Luxury hotels in downtown Rio tend to be much more affordable than equivalent accommodation in Ipanema or Copacabana, and many have excellent business facilities.

For ease of access to the beaches, look for downtown Rio hotels close to the Metro, such as the magnificent Hotel Gloria, which, while currently closed for refurbishments, should be one of the best hotels in the city when it reopens.

Centro itself can be eerily quiet after dark, and Lapa can be a little noisy and seedy, but residential neighborhoods such as Flamengo and Botafogo are good places to look for quality accommodation close to downtown.

Meanwhile, the pretty hillside neighborhood of Santa Teresa boasts many charming guesthouses, such as Casa 579, with its stunning views, and the luxurious new Hotel Santa Teresa is now attracting stars such as the British singer Amy Winehouse.
