  • If your idea of travel is more about chic suites than cramped dorms or bland chain hotels, Rio's boutique hotels have something to suit. Somewhat surprisingly for a city of Rio's size and status, true boutique hostels are a little thin on the ground, but those that do exist are, more often than not, simply stunning. Travelers who can bear to be away from the beaches will find a number of chic options in the pretty hilltop neighborhood of Santa Teresa, while there are a couple of good boutique options in upscale Leblon and Ipanema. As a rule of thumb, you can expect to pay more for your hotel the closer you are to the beach, so you'll need to have deep pockets if you want to find boutique beachfront option. That said, there are some good deals to be found outside the main tourist high seasons of December through to February and July through to September. It goes without saying that Carnival and New Year are super-busy (and super-expensive), so book several months in advance advance to bag the best rooms and the best prices.
