Rio has long been a favourite haunt of the rich, famous and fabulous, and there are no shortage of hip Rio de Janeiro hotels catering to the whims of their fashionable clientele.
But while the hip hotels at the top end of the price scale will cause a sharp intake of breath for anyone not on a superstar salary, this party-loving city also offers some cool and kooky options that won't blow the travel budget sky high.
If money is no object, visitors looking for truly trendy accommodation in Rio should check out the Phillipe Starck-designed Fasano Rio, opposite the beach in Ipanema; or the offbeat Marina All Suites in Leblon - a favourite with supermodel Gisele Bundchen.
Those on a more modest budget might need to sacrifice the beachfront location in their hunt for a hip hotel - the hills of bohemian Santa Teresa are home to scores of wonderfully eccentric guesthouses, and there is luxury in abundance to be found at Mama Ruisa and Santa Teresa Hotel. It's a bus ride to the beaches, but visitors looking for funky Rio de Janeiro hotels will get far moer bang for their buck this side of the city, and the hip Lapa nightlife is just a few minutes away.
