  • Brazilians love children, and kid-friendly hotels in Rio de Janeiro are not hard to come by, whatever your budget.

While accommodation close to the beach tends to be on the expensive side, it's well worth paying extra for the convenience of having those endless sands and crashing waves right on your doorstep. Kids visiting Rio can't get enough of the beaches, and there are some decent deals to be had at beachfront hotels such as our number one pick, Ipanema Praia Hotel.

Families with noisy young children may not be particularly well received by other guests at the city's top-end hotels, but elsewhere a warm welcome is virtually guaranteed.

Generally speaking, families with kids would be best to avoid hotels in Centro, where the stifling heat and lack of easy access to the beach can make things less than comfortable. Largely a business district, Centro has little to offer young visitors after dark and on weekends. However, the nearby hills of Santa Teresa offer some good bed and breakfast options for families, and kids will relish the chance to get close to the jungle and ride the rattling yellow tram along the cobbled streets.

Hotel Gloria, closed for refurbishments but due to reopen in 2011, is one of the very few kid-friendly options right next to Centro. Here, the huge pools and rambling tropical gardens are great fun for children of all ages.
