  • Culinary fashions come and go in Rio, and one month's hot spot can quickly become old hat. But some recent openings look set to stay the course, and our pick of the latest Rio de Janeiro restaurants includes those that have already become part of the city's dining scene.

Our number one pick, Oui Oui, has managed to make French food refreshingly unpretentious, while 66 Bistro offers top-notch international dishes at very fair prices.

In Ipanema, newcomer Gringo Cafe is proving to be a lifeline for homesick North Americans looking for a taste of home, and is also proving that US food isn't all about greasy burgers.

A recent demand for lighter, healthier foods has led to sushi restaurants, such as Cone Lounge, springing up across the city, while Vegan Vegan is an example of the excellent meat-free health food restaurants that can increasingly be found in Rio.

The biggest recent food trend in Rio, however, has been frozen yogurt, and Froyo and Yogoberry are two of the best of the many many places to tuck into this low-cal dessert.
