Top 10:

Music in Rio de Janeiro

  • The Best of NileGuide

  • Rio is synoymous with samba, and live music in Rio de Janeiro is certainly samba-centric, but there's also plenty of opportunity to hear bossa nova, jazz, funk, hip hop and a whole lot more. In short, if you can shake your butt to it, the Brazilians will love it.

Brazilians love music, and when in Rio de Janeiro you may here first-rate samba bands playing at even the most unassuming of neighborhood corner bars, and if you happen to be in Rio de Janeiro in the months leading up to Carnival...well, you won't be able to escape the samba sounds even if you try.

To hear samba, bossa and other Brazilian sounds in an intimate setting, the very casual Bip Bip, in Copacabana, is well worth a visit, while for an edgier music scene, Lapa is the place to be. Take a trip to the Lapa Street Party on a Friday night, and you'll hear funk (that's Carioca Funk, a world away from US Funk), hip hop (pronounced hippy hoppy) and a whole lot more pouring out of the doors and windows of the many bars and clubs here.

For a more sophisticated music scene, try Bar do Tom, in Leblon, where serious jazz fans gather to hear well-crafted versions of classic tracks.

Rock music in Rio can seem a little neglected among all that booty-shaking, but head for the cluster of bars around Praca das Bandeiras on a Saturday night, and there will be plenty of opportunity for rocking out.
