The heart of upper class Rio, Ipanema considers itself head and shoulders above its rowdy neighbor Copacabana, and Ipanema hotels are popular with a well-heeled crowd.
For travelers on a mega-budget, the Philippe Starck-designed Fasano Rio added a splash of glamour to Rio's hotel scene when it opened in 2007, and its rooftop infinity plunge pool is the place to come if you want to spot sunbathing celebrities. Another luxury option, the Caesar Park, has excellent business facilities but lacks Fasano's feeling of decadence.
For travelers without the superstar bucks, Ipanema does offer some reasonably affordable options. A good family option right on the beachfront is Praia Ipanema, with a decent pool and gym, while a couple of blocks back, Ipanema Inn offers basic but clean accommodation close to bars and restaurants. Further up the beach, at the spot where Ipanema meets Copacabana, Arpoador Inn has good-value rooms and a restaurant with tables right on the sands.
Within easy walking distance of the beach, Hotel Vermont is handily placed for the neighborhood's many shops, bars and restaurants, as well as being close to the Metro and several banks.
Budget visitors to Rio will find some friendly hostels in Ipanema, and would be wise to head for 'Hostel Alley', a strip of some six or seven hostels along Rua Barao do Torre.
