Things to do in the Zona Norte of Rio de Janeiro are often overlookd by tourists in favour of the more obvious attractions of the Zona Sul, but there are some Zona Norte sights that are well worth visiting.
Our number one pick, the legendary Maracana Stadium, is a must-visit for any sports fan, and you don't have to be a fan of the beautiful game to enjoy the lively atmosphere at a game here.
Not far from Maracana, Quinta da Boa Vista houses the stately National Museum, and next door is the fun Jardim Zoologico (Rio de Janeiro's city zoo).
The Feira Nordestina is another Zona Norte attraction that merits a visit. This is a vast, covered space dedicated to all things Northeastern, from music and dancing to food. Head here at the weekend, when it stays open straight through from Friday night to the early hours of Monday.
The Sambodromo is world-famous for its carnival parades, of course, and the Apoteose concert space, inside the building, hosts big-name concerts.
