  • No city gets the pulse racing like Rio, and romantic Rio de Janeiro hotels will ensure that your getaway in the city is memorable for all the right reasons.
Romantic couples with a healthy budget can treat themselves to the ultimate luxury lovers' break at the totally fabulous, Phillipe Starck-designed Fasano Rio in Ipanema, our number one pick.

Another top romantic hotel in Rio is the legendary, enduringly glamorous Copacabana Palace, but be sure to ask for a room with a sea view if you don't want mood-spoiling vistas over the congested Copacabana backstreets.

Couples in Rio looking for a secluded hideaway should forget the beach zones of Copacabana and Ipanema, however, and head for the hills of Santa Teresa.

In this beautiful historic neighborhood, there are numerous boutique options, such as Mama Ruisa and Solar da Santa, set in gorgeous tropical gardens and far from the madding crowds.

Down the hill in Gloria, the antique Hotel Gloria is currently closed for extensive repairs, but promises to rival Copacabana Palace when it reopens in 2011.

Visitors hoping to get up close and personal with a local lovely should take note that most 'physical encounters' take place not in Rio's romantic hotels, but in the countless, much cheaper, 'love motels', which range from cheap and seedy to full-on luxury, with a few naughty twists like mirrored ceilings and vibrating beds.
