  • The Best of NileGuide

  • Rio de Janeiro hiking can be as relaxing or as challenging as you choose it to be. The city boasts jungle-clad mountain trails aplenty, and it is even possible to hike up to Sugar Loaf mountain's smaller sister peak, Morro da Urca (and save yourself half the cable car fare in the process...).

Hiking in Rio may involve hacking through thick jungle and fighting off tropical creepy crawlies, so always wear good walking shoes or hiking sandals, and be sure to take along plenty of repellent. As hiking in Rio de Janeiro's sticky heat can be be dehydrating, be sure to take along plenty of water as well.

One last word of advice - it is best to hike in groups and, better still, as part of a guided organised trip, as robberies are not unheard of in the dense jungles of Rio.

If hacking through the jungles sounds too much like hard work, a fast-paced walk along Copacabana beach (or even the 14km beach at Barra da Tijuca) means you can combine your walking with catching some of that Rio de Janeiro sunshine.
