Rio de Janeiro shopping isn't limited to teeny bikinis, flip flops and glow in the dark Christ statues.
While there's plenty of opportunity to pick up all these things at the souvenir shops of Copacabana, you'll find better buys in Rio de Janeiro if you get a little further off the tourist trail.
Serious shoppers should take a bus out west of the city center to Barra da Tijuca, where Barra Shopping, the largest shopping center in Brazil, offers everything from chain stores to chic boutiques.
Meanwhile, hardcore bargain hunters should jump on a Metro to Urugaiana, where it is worth battling through the maze of streets that make up the Saara shopping district, as this is the spot to find cheap and cheerful fashion items as well as carnival costumes and wierd and wonderful gifts.
Vintage clothes enthusiasts and arty types would be wise to take the bonde (tram)up to Santa Teresa, where the cobbled streets are lined with stores selling vintage fashion as well as arts and crafts.
Rio's historic center, based around Rua do Lavradio, is the place to find antiques and collectables, and the monthly Feira do Rio Antigo is a great spot to pick up fashion finds as well as vintage vinyl and items for the home.
Ladies, if you do find yourself coveting one of those teeny weeny Brazilian bikinis, Ipanema's appropriately-named Bum Bum is a good place to find cute and quality tiny two pieces.
