Trendy Rio de Janeiro bars and clubs range from uber-expensive posing palaces to down and dirty hip hop and funk clubs, depending on your definition of what's hot and what's not.
Those who want to rub shoulders with Brazilian beauties (of both sexes) can do so at the hip hangouts of Ipanema, Leblon and Barra da Tijuca, but can expect to pay through the nose for the privilege.

Current hotspots for the rich and beautiful are Londra, Bar d'Hotel and hip new Copacabana lounge/club Bar do Copa.

For a slightlier more alternative approach to nighlife, plenty of trendy rio de Janeiro bars can be found in the neighborhoods of Laranjeiras and Botafogo. Our number one pick, Casa Rosa in Laranjeiras, attracts a young, funky crowd with its ineventive events schedule and funky marketing campaigns.

For a more laidback approach to clubbing and bar hopping, head to Lapa. This is the spiritual home of Rio's most hardcore partiers, and this once-neglected district of Centro is home to countless bars and clubs playing samba, hip hop, funk (that's Rio funk - as far removed from Western notions of the genre as you can imagine) and everything in between.

Lapa is also the setting for a riotous weekend street party, with cocktail vendors aplenty, but do be careful walking the streets here. Leave valuables (including the camera) at home, and keep your cash in front pockets.
