Not so long ago, hotels in Rio de Janeiro had a reputation for being a little drab and uninspired, but the wealth of recently-updated hotels in Rio de Janeiro means that you won't have to put up with dull decor and outdated facilities.
The arrival of the ultra-glam, Phillipe Starck-designed Fasano Rio in Ipanema injected new life into the Rio de Janeiro hotel scene at the tail end of the 'noughties', and other luxury hotels were obliged to raise their game. Copacabana Palace has installed a new spa facility and plush new bar/nightclub, Leblon's Marina All-Suites has improved its pool facilities to give guests fantastic sea views, and Sofitel Rio has been given a top-to-toe revamp. Of the luxury hotels, only Caesar Park, in Ipanema, still feels a little dated, in spite of recent refurbishments.
Meanwhile, up in the hills of Santa Teresa, the 2008 opening of Hotel Santa Teresa has brought five-star luxury, and celebrity guests, to the neighborhood, while the multi-million dollar refit of Hotel Gloria promises to be well worth the wait when this grande dame of Rio hotels finally reopens.
