  • The Best of NileGuide
  • Hotels in Rio de Janeiro range from ultra chic and sleek to bare bones basics, and if you look hard enough you'll find options to suit every taste, lifestyle and budget.

Rio de Janeiro Hotels are far from cheap by South American standards, but there are still some good deals to be had, especially outside the peak tourist seasons. Accommodation in Rio tends to be more expensive the closer you get to the legendary beaches of Ipanema and Copacabana, but for travelers with cash to splash these are the best spots to find truly excellent hotels. Our number one pick, the elegant 2008 newcomer Fasano Rio, is an excellent case in point, and the legendary Copacabana Palace continues to ooze class.

Mid-range budgets will find some of the best value beachside accommodation in Rio at the kooky Grandville Ouro Verde, at the Leme end of Copacabana, and at Arpoador Inn, which enjoys a prime location right on the sands where Copacabana meets Ipanema.

Away from the beaches, Santa Teresa is a beautiful hillside neighborhood with some characterful bed and breakfasts and hostels, generally a good deal more affordable than the beach zones. Nearby, Rio's oldest hotel, Hotel Gloria, is closed for repairs until 2011, but promises to an excellent business and tourist option when it reopens.
