Description:

  • Choose the Books Hostel if you're an adventurous traveler wanting a unique Rio de Janeiro holiday. This friendly, funky Santa Teresa, Rio accommodation offers both dorm beds and private rooms in the artsy neighbourhood of Brazil's second-largest city. The Books Hostel is an independently run property offering a few comfortable rooms in a 3-storey house. It's in an Art Deco building that has been completely renovated and decorated on a literary theme with colourful original artwork. Guests are welcome to use the communal kitchen, bar, outdoor barbeque area, and patio. This hostel is located in the historic downtown ( Centro ) of Rio de Janeiro, between the neighbourhoods called Lapa (or sometimes Arcos da Lapa ) and Santa Teresa. Since the 1950s, Lapa has been known as a centre of Rio nightlife. All kinds of live Brazilian music can be heard in its many bars, restaurants, and clubs. The name Arcos da Lapa (Lapa Arches) refers to the Carioca Aqueduct, a Roman-style aqueduct built around 1750 to bring fresh water from the Carioca River to the city's residents. Since 1896 the arches have been used as a bridge for the Santa Teresa Tram ( Bondinho de Santa Teresa ), which still transports passengers between Rio's city centre and the top of Santa Teresa hill. The Santa Teresa neighbourhood is an artistic hot spot, home to artist studios, galleries, and the Museu da Chácara do Céu art museum.
