- If you wanted to find a place to enjoy a glass of wine while listening to live jazz, it's unlikely you'd head to the top of a favela to do so. Yet that's where you'll find The Maze, a unique guest house and live jazz venue that sits at the top of a hillside favela behind the neighborhood of Catete. The first Friday of every month, talented local musicians gather to entertain an artsy crowd of Rio residents and curious foreigners with improvised jazz jam sessions. The walls are hung with paintings by the guest house's owner, Englishman Bob Nadkarni, and many are available to buy. Meanwhile, the view from the spacious veranda takes in sweeping vistas across Guanabara Bay to Sugar Loaf mountain. - Lucy Bryson
