Angra dos Reis - Rio de Janeiro
  • Type: Nature & Wildlife
  • NileGuide Expert tip:

Keep an eye out for sea turtles when taking a dip in the clear waters here - there are several colonies close to Praia do Bonfim.

  • Description:

    • Tourists often overlook the town of Angra dos Reis in their hurry to reach Ilha Grande, the vast nature reserve island famed for its unspoiled beaches and reached by ferry from here, but Angra is well worth a visit in itself. Head away from the port, which is unspectacular, and past the imposing naval college to find lovely beaches such as Praia do Bonfim and Praia Grande.
Less visited by foreign tourists than Ilha Grande itself, Angra is surrounded by more than 360 islands (of which Ilha Grande is far and away the largest) and its name - which translates as Bay of Kings - should give you some idea of the beauty of its setting.
