NileGuide Expert tip:
Feeling peckish? Keep an eye out for vendors selling packets of freshly roasted and salted peanuts. It's usual for the vendors to leave a sample on the table and then return some minutes later to see if you've been tempted. Don't eat the sample if you have no intention of buying.
Description:
- Head to Centro on a weekday evening, and you'll find the bars crammed with thirsty workers unwinding after hard day in the office. This post-work drinking is known in Rio as 'Happy Hour', and a great place to appreciate the lively, laidback ambiance is at Beco do Comercio. This pedestrianized alley is flanked by handsome colonial buildings, many of which have been transformed into bars and cafes. Arrive here early, pull up a chair on the cobbled street, and watch as workers from the neighboring local office blocks arrive to eat, drink, and make merry. - Lucy Bryson
