Description:

  • This annual event held at Copacabana Beach celebrates Iemanja, goddess of the sea and mother of the waters, according to the Umbanda religion of Brazil. The beach attracts both New Year's revelers and those celebrating the joyful occasion for Iemanja, creating a large but friendly crowd. The first day of the year is marked here by displays of local culture including costumes and dress, dance, art and food. The event is free.
