• Gavea is often overlooked by visitors to Rio, but this leafy, well-to-do residential area is well worth a visit. Alongside some pleasant bars, restaurants and the city's planetarium, the neighborhood is home to Galeria90, a small but interesting gallery showcasing contemporary art from across Rio and wider Brazil. Every couple of months sees a new exhibition here, so there's always something fresh to attract the visitor. Alongside the visual art exhibitions, the galler's theater hosts some of the more avant-garde, low-key productions to be found in Rio. - Lucy Bryson
