NileGuide Expert tip:
While Ipanema is a relatively safe neighborhood by Rio standards, exercise caution at the beach. Leave ipods and other valuables at home, and take only as much money as you will need for drinks, snacks etc. Don't leave your bag unattended while you snooze or take a dip in the sea, and take along a disposable camera if you plan on taking lots of photos.
Description:
- When the sun shines, clued-up Cariocas (Rio locals) head straight for Ipanema beach. The palm-fringed sands and crashing waves are framed by the dramatic Dois Irmoes mountains, and the endless parade of tanned and toned Brazilians makes this the place to come for anyone looking for their own girl or boy from Ipanema. Head to Posto 9 (lifeguard post 9) for the liveliest beach scene, while the area in front of Rua Farme do Amoeda is the designated gay-friendly area.
The size of the waves can make swimming tough going - don't attempt to take a dip when the red flag is up unless you want to be one of the many tourists rescued each year by emergency helicopter. - © NileGuide2013
