NileGuide Expert tip:
Different social groups tend to congregate at different sections of the beach in Ipanema, so take a stroll to find the spot that most appeals to you. Fashionable, beautiful Brazilian girls and guys tend to gather at lifeguard post 9, for example, while gays and lesbians congregate by the rainbow flag close to Rua Farme do Amoeda.
If your image of Rio is of bikini-clad beauties sunning themselves on soft yellow sands, a trip to Ipanema will bring the image very much to life. Here, against a stunning backdrop of crashing waves and rugged, favela-clad mountains, you'll find beautiful Brazilians of both sexes. The beach has now overtaken Copacabana in the popularity stakes and, as such, can be very crowed on weekends and holidays, but head here midweek and you'll have plenty of elbow room. Away from the beach, Ipanema is home to some of the city's most chic boutiques, as well as many lively bars and many of Rio's best restaurants.
