Description:

  • Often overlooked in favour of more celebrated Rio beaches such as Copacabana and Ipanema, Praia Vermelha is one of the most scenic spots in the city for sunbathing.
This little beach sits right at the foot of Sugar Loaf mountain, and although the water is frequently too dirty for swimming, on the rare occasions that the water is relatively clear, the calm waters and secluded bay make it a favourite spot for families.
Although it gets busy at weekends, Praia Vermelha tends to be quiet during the week, and the presence of a nearby military base makes it one of the safer spots in Rio for sunbathing.
