Description:
- This is the day when Husayn, the grandson of the Prophet, was killed at Karbala, in his fight to get control of the position of Caliph. People belonging to the Shia sect take part in mourning rituals that include thumping of chests and self-flogging. Plays re-enacting Husayn's martyrdom are held and emotions ride high as mourners hurt themselves with sharp knives and chains to connect with Husayn's pain. This holy festival falls on the 10th day of the month of Moharram. It is regarded as the end of the golden era of Islam, when the Prophet and the companions chosen by him ruled over Arabia. On this day, Muslims pray, fast and read the Quran.
