    • This neoclassical palace overlooking the Piazza della Repubblica at the rail terminal also fronts the Baths of Diocletian and Michelangelo's Basilica degli Angeli. One of Rome's latest government-rated five-star luxury hotels, the Exedra is a study in modern elegance combined with the romance of the past. Our favorite rooms are the top-floor accommodations in the Clementino Wing, each with bare brick walls and the original ceiling beams. You'll find creamy marble, lush carpeting, discreet lighting, and high ceilings throughout the building, while rooms feature such decorative notes as leather headboards and silk wall coverings. You can take morning coffee on the rooftop garden terrace overlooking the Fountain of the Naiads. Later you can retreat to one of Rome's best hotel spas. The restaurants celebrate Rome in the 1950s and 1960s -- for example, La Frustra was inspired by Fellini's Oscar-winning film 8 1/2.
