This restored landmark is more plush and upscale than any hotel in the area -- not even the comparable Excelsior or the Eden across town can match its sheer opulence. Its drawback is its location at the dreary Stazione Termini, but once you're inside its splendid shell, all thoughts of railway stations vanish. When Ceásar Ritz founded this outrageously expensive hotel in 1894, it was the first to offer a private bathroom and two electric lights in every room. Today it is a magnificent Roman palazzo, combining Italian and French styles in decoration and furnishings. The lobby is decked out with Murano chandeliers, columns, marble busts, and cherubs. The guest rooms are exceedingly spacious and luxuriously furnished with hand-painted frescoes installed above each headboard. For the best rooms and the finest service, ask to be booked on the St. Regis floor.
