NileGuide Expert tip:
The 4/5th floor suite is the most expensive in Europe.
Description:
If money is no object, here's a good place to spend it. The Excelsior is more grandiose architecturally than either the Eden or the Hassler, but it is not as up-to-date or as beautifully renovated as the Eden or the St. Regis Grand. Everything looks just a tad dowdy today, but the Excelsior endures, in no small part because of the hospitable staff. The baroque corner tower of this limestone palace, overlooking the U.S. Embassy, is a landmark in Rome. Cavernous reception rooms are adorned with thick rugs, marble floors, gilded garlands decorating the walls, and Empire furniture. The guest rooms come in two varieties: new (the result of a major renovation) and traditional. The older ones are a bit worn, while the newer ones have more imaginative color schemes and plush carpeting. All are spacious and elegantly furnished, with antiques and silk curtains.

A bit out of the way, but well worth it. In a residential area with local restaurants and services. Lobby fantastic. Rooms large and comfortable. Everything works well.

The hotel is reasonably well located in certain aspects, but a fair hike to the ruins, etc. Despite the hotel having been upgraded fairly recently, the hotel seems worn and not very...
