Ostiense/San Paolo/Garbatella/Magliana/Eur
Heading southwest out of the ancient walls is the beginning of Ostiense area, a favorite to many Romans for its "real Roman" vibe from local markets and shops to local prices. Garbatella is primping to become the newest gentrified working class neighborhood while the San Paolo zone boasts the Basilica San Paolo Fuori le Mura, a cathedral housing St. Paul's tomb. Further out still is EUR, the "city of the future" built under the Mussolini's regime and retaining its austere fascist architecture. Though not far from the center, these areas require public transport or else be prepared for high taxi costs, if you can find one!
