Blessing of the Animals (The)

  • Type: Events
  • NileGuide Expert Says:

Italy, and Rome particularly, has one of the most active animal rights populations in the world. On January 1 7 of each year, Italians celebrate animals by blessing them in participating churches throughout the country. Animals even have their own patron saint: S. Antonio Abate.

  • Description:

    • St. Anthony, the patron saint of animals, understands the deep respect some of us feel for the pets we count as family members. The Blessing of the Animals is an event in many world cities, including New York and Mexico City. Celebrated on January 17 in Rome, mostly domestic animals will receive a blessing. Gone are the days when mainly farm animals tromped down the aisle. If you fancy bringing along Morris or Spot, seek the necessary permission before showing up at the door. Free admission.
