Blessing of the Cars

  • Type: Events
  • NileGuide Expert Says:

In a city where traffic is not only heavy but also dangerous, the blessing of the cars has become an important event that takes place on March 9 of every year.

  • Description:

    • This is one of those events that makes headlines around the world every single year, and everyone except the Italians thinks it is a hoax. On this day, thousands of cars, trucks, taxis, buses, and their drivers, come to the Santa Francesca Romana Church near the Colosseum to be blessed. It was Saint Frances of Rome who was named the patron saint of drivers in 1925 by Pope Pius IX. Note that the closer you get to the action, the more blessed you and your vehicle will be! Needless to say, if you are coming only to watch the proceedings, take public transport.
