Founded in the IVth century along with St. Peter's Basilica, Borgo became flooded with pilgrims from all over Europe. Taking on various transformations throughout the years, millions of pilgrims returned to Borgo to honor the late Pope John Paul II in 2005, forcing Borghiciani (Roman term to describe Borgo residents) to temporarily leave their neighborhood until the number of visiting pilgrims decreased.
