- Just as most other cities, Rome has its own monumental cemetary. Walking through the walkways of this huge place, you'll discover a bit of history by simply regarding the graves of important people that are buried here. The origin of its name is found in the nearby field of Verani, where once lived a senator's family during the Roman Republic. It was under Napoleonic control that this place became an official burial spot, because, as the law outlined at the time, it was outside the walls of the main city. Since then the cemetery never stopped growing, and in 1879 a horse route was organized from the main Termini Station to Verano. Taking a look at the list of famous people buried in this place, you can easily understand why everyone in Rome wishes to end up here after their long lives.
