Via dei Banchi Nuovi

Description:

  • Via dei Banchi Nuovi was built by Pope Sixtus IV in the 16th century. Its name was chosen to differentiate it from the nearby Via dei Banchi Vecchi, which is where bankers had their offices during the previous century and where the very rich Alessandro Chigi had his 'bank'. The street was part of the papal road that led from the Vatican to the Lateran. Over time it became more magnificent and elegant thanks to the construction of palazzi that powerful members of the Curia took as their residences.
