Take a look of this website http://www.gsr-roma.com/english/
I know that children aged six and older (that includes Dad) can spend an afternoon at the Gladiator School of Rome learning about gladiators. For more details I suggest you to contact the school by e.mail.

Absolutely no problem for your young son: the show are organized for the pleasure of tourists, historians and people simply curious to know. No violence at all! look at their website: http://www.gsr-roma.com/.
There is a second site (only in Italian) http://www.scuolagladiatoriroma.it/la_notte_dei_gladiatori_5.html but from the pictures you can see that young kids are really welcomed at these shows!
Should you then visit the Colosseum and the Forum I make guided tours being a professional guide as you can see from my web-site www.tourguideinrome.it
